It is like Andrew Lloyd Webber(Evita 1996 and The Phantom of the Opera 2004) but WITH intelligence....
The first and last half are certainly the best; the middle DOES outstay its welcome at times... but on the whole it is a beautiful cinematic transcription of the famous French musical....
To my mind it will be a landmark in the genre of the musical film.
The audience indeed applauded after various experiences of catharsis.....
Anne Hathaway bring memories back to Falconetti as Joan of Arc 1928 and Marion Cotillard as Piaf in La Mome:-)
Her artistry is indeed a treasure to behold.... as is Hugh Jackman in the first half..... it is a pending pain to see these two.. their involvement in their characters are complete.
A major letdown are the Thenardiers.... On stage they are played with vigour, color and camp; Helena Bonham Carter and Sashca Baron Cohen let us totally down in their low key interpretations....
They audience cheered and left silently and exhausted after an almost 3 hour run
