So... on May 1
I finally saw it.....
After a great build-up however, it turned into a big yawn.... There`s nothing new here.... "Mary Poppins Returns" only succeed when it echoes the legendary 1964 film... And unfortunately... it does that much too often but never impoves upon the original....
The songs have a sameness and will never be evergreens like the Sherman songs....
Emily Blunt is competent, but lacks star quality and her role is written as much too passive... Much too often she is relegated in the background and indeed becomes much to much a supporting player...
Oh how I wish they could have chosen Anne Hathaway after seeing her parody years ago on Saturday Night Live....
Yes memories of the British girl years ago lingers on----
There are compensations however in the production values, Ben Wishaw, Julie Walters, Karen Dotrice(the original Jane as an elegant lady) and Emily Mortimer---
The true stars of the picture are three appearances from Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke...
They all enhance this production and tears were streaming down my face when Mr VanDyke appeared just as energetic and wonderful as in 1964....
The finale is even better than the one from 1964 and again those "bloody" tears haunted me.... Oh how I wish my mother could have seen this with me...
She would have loved it.... I saw the original in the theatre 1977 with her and my sis Heidi and it has enhanced my life ever since...
You see ....."Mary Poppins" is a film can can be enjoyed by both small ones and grown ups.... It has values in star quality, songs, story line, production values and message....
I`m not sure this effort will please others than true musical lovers--- As a product it falls between chairs.... I think both small children and grown ups will find this film a trifle boring...
It really is a muddle..
I am sure P L Travers(the author of the books the and hater of the 1964 film) would have thrown tomatoes and this time I cannot blame her....
